Owls by Kate Davies is the fourth sweater I have made. It is also the second sweater I’ve made that has fit. Although knitting is relaxing and enjoyable in its own right, it is extra nice when the piece you are making turns out as you had hoped.
I started making Owls about 6 weeks ago. I used Cascade Yarns baby alpaca, chunky weight. This thick yarn makes the sweater a relatively fast knit. (I rarely get time to knit during the week, so I mostly completed it in about 6 weekends, a few hours each weekend). This yarn is super soft and cozy, and I got it on sale at Sifu Design Studio.
The sweater is knit bottom up. Once it is armpit high, you make the sleeves, wrist up, then join it all together to make the yoke (shoulder part) and neckline. Then comes the most interesting part- the cabled owls.
The owls are a little tricky to see without their eyes sewn in yet.
I finally got to try it on to see whether or not it would fit. Notice the circular needle is still in the collar. It fits! And there was extra string for Smudge to play with.
Don’t pull too hard, Smudge!
Then comes the part that I was least motivated for, sewing on the button eyes.
But after that comes the best part. Wearing it!
That is beautiful Kristen! !
Thanks!
Way too cute! Wish I was a better knitter to even try to make a sweater so cute 😀
It’s actually not a difficult knit to make. If you can knit, purl, knit in the round and decrease, you can probably do it!
Beautiful!
I’ve seen that on Ravelry but I just don’t know if I’m ready to attempt a sweater. I haven’t really made anything where gauge is important, and I’m worried I’ll mess it up.
P.S. That yarn looks so cozy.
The yarn is cozy. The way I handle gauge- just start making the project and then check gauge after a few inches. I hate swatching.
That’s adorable! And I’m sure it feel amazing to know that you did it. Nice work 🙂
Thanks! It does feel pretty good. 🙂
Adorable. I would love to start knitting. I know how to knit, just have not been inspired to find time to do so. 😦
Join a knitting group if you can find one in your area! They are a great way to find time and get inspired (and get help when you’re stuck.
That’s an amazing sweater! I’m really tall & have long arms so it’s always hard for me to find cute sweaters. I wish I could knit like you, girl! Amazing talent 🙂
Blessings,
Jen
Thanks! That’s what I like about knitting too- you can customize the size. I prefer 3/4 length sleeves and like longer torsos on my shirts.
I’m sure you could learn if you wanted to!
I am SO impressed! The owls are adorable!
Thanks! I can’t take credit for the pattern though. All I did was follow directions. 🙂
You didn’t tell me you made this! I love it! And it looked (looks) so sweet on you!
Thanks, Colleen.
That is so hot! I love that pattern. It needs to go on my knit list soon.
Thank you.
Wow that looks really nice. I love owls, but I am still a little skeptical about cables. I have done it a couple of times, but they always come out too tight.
Thanks. This is one of the first cabled projects I’ve done. They were on needle size 10, which might help them not be too tight.
Oh my goodness! I love that pattern! Seeing that really makes me want to practice, practice, practice… beautiful work and I just love owls.
Thanks! It would be a great beginners sweater!
Love love love!
Beautiful sweater. Obviously made by hand; what machine could do that? I’m doing well to knit a scarf, wonder if I’ll ever get this good. A true gift you have.
Janet
I’m sure you can do it. Just keep practicing. 🙂
This is so unique and so awesome. You’ve got a wonderful talent!
Thanks! I can’t take credit for the pattern, though.
wow! that is so cool, I wish I knew how to knit. My daughter would love that sweater, she is studying owls at school and has a stuffed animal one she brings everywhere.
Thanks. I’m sure you could learn to knit. Check out instructional videos on youtube if you want to learn. Good luck!
